Subnautica 2 Creatures & Leviathan Threats

A quick-read creature roster for Early Access: see the image, threat level, behavior, biome context, source notes, and Hotfix 3 creature-tuning warnings before opening the full guide.

Read this first: Hotfix 3 changed Hammerhead / Tadpole behavior, Nibbler detection and damage, and Marrowbreach damage timing. Green entries are safer scan practice, amber/orange entries need escape planning, and red entries are leviathan-level avoid-or-evade encounters.
This page tracks fauna and leviathan encounters. Plant-like lifeforms, harvestables, and hazard flora stay in Flora or Lifeforms until creature behavior, scanner results, or official media supports a fauna page.
5 / 5 Apex
3

Collector, Void, and leviathan trackers. Escape planning first; combat details need in-game checks.

3-4 / 5 Predators
2

Threats where route, speed, cover, and scan timing matter.

1 / 5 Safe scans
2

Best first targets for scanner practice and DNA sampling.

Search leads still waiting on in-game checks or official media.

Creature roster at a glance

Cards are ordered by practical risk: apex threats first, then predators, then safe scans and verification trackers. Creature renders are used only where the visible creature identity is clear; uncertain entries keep their older media or placeholder treatment.

Source status labels

Creature database pages around the web often mix official names, public-guide leads, generated descriptions, flora, and unsupported scan text. These labels explain what our page is willing to claim today.

Official media

The image or name comes from Steam or Unknown Worlds media. Exact spawn, scan text, and item links still need current-build checks.

Official name

Unknown Worlds has used the creature name, but gameplay location, behavior, and route advice still need in-game confirmation.

Patch-sensitive

A useful route or behavior lead exists, but Early Access patches can still move spawns, aggro, and safe approach rules.

Needs in-game media

The page uses original placeholder art or a cautious label until official or in-game media is available.

Search lead

Search, public guide, or database-style demand exists. Do not treat appearance, drops, coordinates, or scan text as fact yet.

Threat level key

Use this before you chase a scanner entry. The number is not a health stat; it is a survival decision label.

Level Category What it means
1 / 5 Passive scans Safe to approach, scan, and observe. Use these to learn scanner range and calm approach timing.
3 / 5 Pursuit predators Fast enough to punish bad routes. Keep distance, mobility, or vehicle support nearby, and recheck old advice after Hotfix 3.
4 / 5 High-risk predators Scan only from cover and avoid long stationary windows. Hotfix 3 changed Marrowbreach damage and timing, so exact values stay in current-build checks.
5 / 5 Leviathan-class Do not fight. Treat every sighting as an escape route test, not a combat challenge.
Watchlist Search / source trackers Keep the page visible for demand, but do not publish appearance, drops, or coordinates as facts.

Creature watchlist

External database-style pages are exposing many fauna and flora-like creature rows. We keep high-demand names visible here only as watch items until official media, in-game scans, or reliable public guides support a full page.

Bullethead

Predator lead

Repeated in external database-style coverage and public guide snippets. Treat as a predator lead until route, behavior, and media are confirmed in-game.

Coral Crab

Source watch

Potential Coral Gardens creature and biomod source lead. Do not publish drops, locations, or images without reliable support.

Electric Geordie

Bioscanner watch

Appears in external biomod/database-style coverage. Needs a creature page only after source media or a tested scan result.

Hoverthorn

Map-backed biomod lead

Already tracked as a pit-edge scan lead for Threat Sense planning, but not enough for a full creature page.

Surge Jelly

Map-backed biomod lead

Tracked near southern current routes for Homing Sense planning. Keep as route support until behavior and scan results are verified.

Needler Mango

Map-backed biomod lead

Useful Alien Ruins scan target and route hazard context, but exact creature-to-biomod row still needs a current-build Bioscanner check.

How to survive your first leviathan

The Subnautica series doesn't telegraph these well. Some practical habits:

🔊 Listen first. Most leviathans have audio tells before they appear. Volume up on launch night.
🎵 If the music shifts to something heavy, you have entered a hunting ground. Reverse course.
💾 Save before any unfamiliar deep dive. Co-op respawn is generous but world saves can desync.
🚑 When a friend dies to one, do not rescue immediately. Regroup at base, return with two people and a vehicle.

Creature pages should pair behavior with where players first meet them.
