What "Early Access" means here
Subnautica 2 launched with a deliberately narrower scope than the original Subnautica's full 1.0. The launch build is the baseline that subsequent Early Access updates will expand against. Unknown Worlds confirmed more biomes, creatures, vehicles, and story content will roll out over the Early Access period.
Practical impact: recipes, creature behaviour, and progression systems are subject to change between patches. Players keeping long-term saves should manually back up before each major patch cycle.
What's confirmed playable at launch
- 4-player co-op with crossplay. Working across Steam, Epic, Xbox, and PC Game Pass without manual NAT setup. See co-op setup.
- The DNA Modification / Biomods system. Biolab choices are live, and later Bioscanner unlocks are becoming a major guide topic. See DNA Modification.
- Digestive Incompatibility mechanic. The "is the game broken?" first-hour confusion turns out to be intentional. See the Angel Comb route.
- World sharing. Co-op groups can plan shared-world access, but live host migration still needs current-build verification. See the launch update.
Day-one numbers
The launch metrics outperformed pre-release projections: Unknown Worlds confirmed 1+ million copies sold in the first hour, then Krafton reported 2+ million copies within 12 hours with 651,000 peak concurrent players across Steam, Epic, and Xbox. The Steam-only peak in that follow-up was 467,000 concurrent players, and the launch-day Steam review verdict settled at Very Positive.
What's coming next
Unknown Worlds published the first Early Access roadmap on May 15, 2026. EA 1.1 is the quality-of-life bucket covering biomods, blight encounters, wrecks, vehicle docking/fabrication, PDA and voicelog priority, storage cache, and sprint. EA 1.2 is the co-op bucket covering HUD signals, base builder improvements, pinned recipes, voice chat, emotes, trading, player customization, and revives. Larger world, biome, creature, resource, tool, vehicle, and story expansions come later.
Hotfixes are already part of the cadence: the wall demolition hotfix landed in <24 hours. PlayStation and Nintendo ports remain unannounced in the current official listings, so treat PS5, Switch, or Switch 2 dates as speculation unless Unknown Worlds, Xbox, or a storefront publishes them.
