Can You Preload Subnautica 2?
A launch-window preload archive for players checking install size, platform behavior, and why PC Game Pass handled the download differently.
Launch-window answer: Steam, Epic, and Xbox had preload access before launch. The preload pulled 12.9 GB, leaving 14.56 GB installed on disk. PC Game Pass did not preload; that download started at unlock.

No preload
The PC Game Pass download began only after the game unlocked on May 14. Console Game Pass followed the normal Xbox preload flow.
How to preload, per storefront
Steam
Open the Subnautica 2 store page in the Steam client (not the browser). Pre-purchase, then go to your Library and click "Pre-load". The 12.9 GB download queues like any other install.
Epic Games Store
In the Epic launcher, pre-purchase, then look for the "Install" button on the game tile. Epic does not always label it "preload" but the behavior is the same.
Xbox (console)
Pre-order on the Microsoft Store, then look in your console library under "Ready to install". Console preload uses platform compression so the on-disk number can differ slightly from the PC figure.
PC Game Pass
No preload is offered for the PC Game Pass version. The Xbox app on PC will only let you start the download after Unknown Worlds unlocks the game at 08:00 PT on May 14, 2026.
Things to sort before a fresh install
The preload window is over, but the same account and storage checks still prevent install problems.
- Free up at least 20 GB on the install drive. 14.56 GB is the launch footprint, but Steam stages an extra copy during preload verification.
- Sign in to the right account. If you bought on a different Steam account, or your Game Pass is on a family member's profile, fix that before installing.
- Update the launcher itself. Steam and the Xbox app push updates on first launch and that can add 5 to 10 minutes if you have been offline a while.
- If the store still shows the wrong entitlement state, restart the launcher before assuming the servers are down. Local cache delays are still a common cause.
